June 2006 Consignment Pickups
Highlights of my Florida trip for consignment pick-up
This was my first trip to Florida where I experience a tropical storm and very high humidity, but met some wonderful people. I did pick-up a garage full of military collectibles that covers the Civil War to the Vietnam war, which includes swords, bayonets, helmets, visor caps, medals, patches, uniforms, cigarette lighters, etc. It all came from the closing of a shop and then set in a garage for two years.
Then on my drive back through Tennessee I picked up a grouping of German WWII items all brought back by a veteran of the 4th Armored Div. One of the most interesting items is a flag that was taken from the Ohrduf Concentration camp on April 4th 1945 and so marked.
For more information about the Ohrduf camp and the 4th Armored Div. during the liberation go to http://www.89infdivww2.org/ohrdruf/ohrdrufintro.htm
It also comes with a fantastic scrap book from the soldier with lots of documentation.
Highlights of Fort Worth Military Show
Joe Tucker and I flew to the 400 table Fort Worth Military Show, where we met many of our customers and consignors. It's always nice to put a face with the name. There was a huge crowd of people on Saturday where there was a lot of selling and trading going on among the dealers and collectors, from that it looks like the hobby is still very strong. One very important note to pass along to everyone flying, DO NOT put zippo cigarette lighters in your checked luggage, the TSA will remove the inserts even though there web site says they do not. I learned this from first hand experience! Other than that, it was a great show and we hope to meet you at an up coming event!

Manion's holds open house

A light spring rain that turned into a torrential downpour didn't deter an estimated 200 military and historic collectors, their families and friends from attending Manion's International Auction House's Spring Open House on June 5, 2006. Attendees, who included Kansas City, KS, Mayor Joe Reardon and other other local dignitaries, were treated to a large number of military and collectible displays, a Congressional Medal of Honor winner and a catered barbecue dinner in a tented area outside Manion's main building. The military displays included a large number of uniforms used in various Hollywood films such as "All Quiet On the Western Front," "The Alamo," "She Wore A Yellow Ribbon" and "Gone With the Wind." There also were many authentic WWI and WWII military uniforms from a recently acquired collection
from the Museum of World Wars. Former US Marine Corpsman Donald Ballard, who received the Medal of Honor while serving as a combat medic in Vietnam, signed autographs at a table displaying his marine and navy uniforms. Ballard, a Kansas City native, received the nation's highest honor from then-President Richard Nixon for throwing himself on an enemy grenade in an effort to protect several US soldiers during a firefight in May of 1968. The grenade failed to detonate and Ballard was able to continue to administer aid to soldiers wounded in the battle. During the open house, a strong thunderstorm moved through the area, chasing those enjoying the warm weather back indoors or to their cars, adding a pyrotechic finish to the evening.
